Wreathes at Ft Snelling Cemetery

I am a USAF veteran. I feel very inadequate when I go to VA events or are told thanks for your service. I spent three years at Minot AFB ND after a year at electronics tech school. I salute Vet in wheelchairs or that have lost a limb. Yea we all served but these people were actually shot at them. So, when I get a chance to help Vets I do.

Every year there is a great program called Wreathes Over America. With that program wreathes are laid on veterans’ graves at Ft Snelling National Cemetery by the Airport. It is usually done on a Saturday in early December. There is no signing up just show up to help.

I did so this year at 10AM on December 22, 2023. And what I found was a bunch of people all ages and race parking their vehicles and walking to a gathering place where the wreathes were held. There was perhaps a thousand people on a very nice day the good lord provided.

Our instructions were less than a minute. Pick up a few wreathes and put them on every third grave. I you went past a Jewish Grave please stop for a moment of silence and put no wreathe there. That was it. Then we heard Thank You and thousands of people proceeded through the cemetery laying wreathes on Tomb Markers.

It can make you feel pretty-small, when you think that below lies a man or woman who gave their life so you could have the life you do.

I will be back next year with E and our grandkids. This is something important that everyone should do at least once. I spent less than a half an hour at the event but it sure was a well spent half an hour.

There are about twenty cemeteries across MN that have the event. The website has a list and when the event is. You can also sponsor a wreath on the website, those are $17 each. At Christmas time the time of giving how about giving something back to those that gave it all.

It was a great-day and we will be back.
