WA Frost
There are a few epic venues left in the Twin Cities where you can propose marriage, tell parents of a grandchild or any of a dozen notable things in life. WA Frost is one of them. This place has class from the first step in the door. The place both inside and out are impeccable. We have gone in February drinking RED Zin next to a roaring fire and this past weekend in their best in the city courtyard. Few venues can compare.
The staff is always classy and E & I enjoyed two 2-year-olds discovering they could go up and down the stairs while the wait staff giggled as they delivered incredible plates around them. If you think of an incredible venue known for great wine, food and atmosphere WA Frost a few blocks from the St Paul Cathedral on Selby needs to be on your short list. I forget if I or E who brought up going to WA Frost a couple of weeks ago but the reaction from the other was simply WHEN! We LIKE the place.
As of late I have been trying to get the bad things about the place out first. Parking sucks and when we were there, there was no Vallet. I parked four blocks away after dropping off E. The Cathedral area is a fairly safe area, yet I would still prefer to be in the burbs late night.
We own The MN Wine Club so we enjoy the great wine selection has. And since I am from Wisconsin I talk to strangers. One table came over to us and said it looks like we knew wine could you choose a bottle of wine for us. This had never happened before, but we are game. We tour wine regions over July Fourth holiday and a few years ago we went to Paso Robles in Central Coast California. One of the $14/glass wines was from one of the wineries we toured who were really nice people and made great wine, so we recommended their wine. Turned out to be a great hit. It did help that E chose it earlier.
For wine E had a Paso Robles Fossil Point Cab for $14 and I had a Tuscany Sangiovese/Cab blend Capezzana for $15 both great pour and flavor.
WA Frost know wine people. There are few things better than sipping wine on a deck with bread to dip in olive oil. It’s on their menu and rarely seen throughout the cities. We are trying to get rid of bread at home. But our two VP dogs wake me up at 3 AM a couple days a week for a PB sammich! The breadbasket for $10 was as amazing as the wine.
So, what to eat. We started with a watermelon radish salad for $15. Now WA Frost does something that no other restaurant in the TCs does. WE split most of what we eat. The salad came in a bowl, but exactly half the bowl was filled. It was interesting. We were not quite sure WHY they did it but it was interesting. And half a popcorn bowl of salad split between us was the perfect amount of salad.
For entre we had Beef Carpaccio for $20 which was thinly sliced beef with bread and salad. Also Halibut cheeks for $25 which was nothing short than a work of art. One of those dishes you hold off eating because you hate to destroy a beautiful thing. The phrase great food can also look art is not wasted on WA Frost their chefs are artists.
With the beautiful garden we ate in, the entertaining kids, the great food and wine I can’t thing of a more enjoyable time. And the bill $113 was a tad more than we normally spend but rarely do we see everything come together like at WA Frost. And of COURSE we will be back!
