Theater In The Round
The Twin Cities is one of the great theater cities in the world. I came from central Wisconsin where I think Shakepear was from…. But I could be wrong. My first live production I ever saw was at Minot State College known as a pinnacle of Theater. So when I came to the Twin Cities my live theater knowledge was limited. Over the years I have been to the Guthrie and a dozen other local theaters. Two that really stood out is Old Log Theater of Excelsior, where Nick Nolte started his career and Theater In The Round.
When I feel the need to go to the Theater, Theater in the Round is the first place I look. Why? Does TIR (Theater In The Round) the best venue to people watch and see a great play? No that would be the Guthrie Theater. Is it the Cheapest? No that would be any of the many productions from our many area Community Colleges. What I like about TIR is they have interesting plays, that are usually funny, that are from authors I am familiar with but most importantly it’s The Theater In the Round.
Which means the WORST seats in the house are about ten rows back from the actors. And if I order a week in advance I can usually get front row seats for about $20. A great place for date night and for us we introduced our son to theater at TIR. He brought down the house when he saw his first life theater kiss in the front frow at the play Biloxi Blues. The crowd enjoyed a ten-year-olds reaction of Oh NO! which echoed in the small theater. It’s a fun venue.
So, the other day I got the feeling it had been too long since we had been to a play. I looked at the TIR website and found out they were showing Legacy Of Light by Karen Zacarias. Legacy is an interesting comedy set in the 1700s with Voltaire played by David Denninger being one of the main actors. With Voltaire as part of the theme it had to be good. In one memorable line Voltaire said: “YOU my lady are my Lover and if you continue to entertain my student I will tell your husband on you!”
This was tied into another set of actors who played a couple in current day trying to have a child in an all too busy world. Sometimes scene to scene we were not quite sure which century we were in. Made for an interesting experience. It was a fun play.
TIR is a community theater that has been around since 1952. If your keeping track it is located by Seven Corners area a block from 35W and Washington Avenue, near the 35W Bridge that collapsed. TIR is about Two blocks from the U of M Mpls campus and about two blocks from the Coffee House where Bob Dylan was discovered. The TIR has a nice parking lot at the hotel a block away. Parking cost us about $12.
TIR is a community theater supported by the community. For about $100 you can be a major contributor to the theater and actually have your name on the program. Something we will be starting to do this year.
At half time they you can feast on cookies and cakes and beverages for about $10. At the same time meet the rest of the people at the show and on occasion the actors themselves.
Theater In The Round is just a fun place to see a play and is worth every penny. We are regulars.
