What restaurants do absolutely amazes me. Every week they order just the right amount of steak, eggs, flour, wine, trout, pasta and a hundred other things we do not see. To serve the people coming in that we know not how many, or how long they will sit at their table. It's an acrobatic act that only P.T. Barnum could grasp. And yet every day these warriors make the whole thing work. And beyond that keep constant quality on everything from drinks to rolls.
The area of South St Paul by 494 and the river has been known for the stockyards for a century. The South St Paul Stockyards was one of the largest in the world for Midwest cattle going to market from 1886 to 2008. So when we heard about the Stockyard Tavern & Chophouse we knew if we were going to get a good steak in the area for under $100 that was the place to go.
The Stockyards Tavern & Chophouse is exactly how it sounds, including the people that eat and drink there. If I would not have known better I would think we were in the Dakotas, Wyoming, Montana for further west. Cowboy hats and boots are right in style.
The place is large and clean with a beautiful fire-driven patio. Food and the prices were good. WE rarely go out to eat steak because we try to keep our bill under $100 such that the average person can go where we go. Ours was $94 with two steaks, a Rueben, fries, a salad and rolls to absolutely die for. And the wine was pretty good too.
We absolutely NEVER tell any place we will be writing a review on them and never show our faces to be recognized from our reviews. So when the manager came out to talk to us, as ALL GREAT restaurant managers do, we were surprised. But not as surprised by what he said. He said he was not happy with the quality of the baked potatoes; would we be interested in another side? I said mashed were fine if they were ok. It absolutely amazed us a manager was that concerned with quality, fantastic.
Everything was good, E was less than impressed with her Rueben, but she rarely orders them because they are so difficult to make.
If you are looking to bring parents or relatives to a place like back home Stockyard Tavern & Chophouse is the place. And our bill was $94.36 WITH $7 tax. Worth every penny.
