St Mary’s Greek

On the very short list of festivals we never miss each year is St Marys Orthodox Church over looking Lake Calhoun with the great gold dome on the corner of 35th & Irving in Minneapolis.

There are a handful of reasons we never miss it. First the Greek Food is traditional and is some of the best food we ever taste. Second the Greek people are so nice. Third it is a safe venue. Fourth good close free parking. And it is the weekend after Laboy Day so it’s one of the few events that weekend.

Yes there are a ton of people and though the lines look long, the cooks are incredible. It’s only, a 5-10 wait for food. About half what you will wait at the state fair the previous weekend.

Ron White the comedian has a bit about tickets for food and drink. He waits in this long line with cash to get a beer. When he finally makes it to the front of the line he asks for a beer and they ask him for his KOUPONS. He said he had no KOUPONS. Try said we only take KOUPONS for beer. The Ron said where would one FIND these magical KOUPONS. He was told see that LONG LINE?!

At most festivals they ask you to purchase tickets/coupons. You then need to determine your need and buy more than you need. God Forbid your food & drink totals 27 coupons and you have 26! Well St Marys no longer does tickets they take cash & credit cards. Do things cost more? We have no idea it’s good food and it’s not expensive.

So what is there to eat? I have included the menu with a dozen Greek dishes all under $16. We always have the Gyros with beef & lamb for $10 each. Add $4 for Greek French Fries.

And while  I’m in line for food E buys us our wine. Greek wine both red & white under $10 a glass. So we eat, drink & support great people and a church for about $50.

All the time there are Greek Dancing and Music to fill your soul. And let me not forget a ton of cute Greek kids running around, performing and having a great time. We are definitely bringing our grandkids along in the future.

So after you get your food & drink you can walk around a beautiful church and facilities. We always sit on their incredible patio and gardens that over look Lake Calhoun that would accommodate a hundred people eating.

After eating we tour their great market place inside with clothes, jewelry, bake goods and an incredible Greek Spice E buys for cooking every year.

After one or two hours we are done with the festival for another year and walk to our SUV at a very safe part of town surrounded by incredible houses. We will be back next year!
