Salt & Flour
E & I go to some amazing places. But sometimes we go to places that need a lot of work. That is the case with Salt & Flour. When we go to places like great chef Gavin Newson’s Bellecour which we did recently, everything is correct. He worries about the little things. We saw the restaurant Dario just a few blocks away from Salt & Flour as we were looking for Salt & Flour. Darios is another great restaurant, that just does it right. The manager of Darios stopped by our table before we left and we talked for 5 minutes, and that is how a smart manager finds out how they are doing. We absolutely NEVER tell anyone from the place or anyone else before we get the bill, so we get the same service you should. If you go to Salt & Flour I hope you DON’T get the experience we did.

We go to over 100 events and places a year. If we were terrible at navigating the Twin Cities we’d still be looking for place #10. But Salt & Flour was different.  We have a simple process. When E makes reservation, if she can. Then we put the address into the navigational system and we drive there. And we absolutely NEVER leave the vehicle until we see the place. Then drop off E and I look for a place to park. A rule we broke on this night.

We pulled around the block we understood Salt & Flour was at, twice, and could not see it. So we paid for parking and tried to walk it. After getting to the address, Salt & Flour was not there. Are we to blame? I don’t know. Did I tell you I repaired Navigation systems in the USAF? I should be able to navigate, but that was years ago.

So we called Salt & Flour and got the Maitre De.  We said we were looking for your restaurant and we were on the corner of 5th & Nicollet where were they from where we were at? She said I don’t know where that is (it was four blocks away, a North Vs South Thing on the fail line). She said Look up North Loop Green 360, that was a great help.

It was raining, E wanted to go home. And she was probably right, but we are small business owners we like to help out new small businesses. So we got in the Range Rover and prepared to search for our food!

We tried to find a bridge across the Mississippi river once in New Orleans with three adult drivers in the rental, took us three times in a loop. It seems in Louisiana you need to enter the freeway going North to cross the river going south. If you have spent much time around Target Field and the parking ramps around it and the light rail, you know what of I speak. The GPS would say go right and the signs said don’t do that. Finally on this rainy, dreary, late March night, we looked a block and a half between the buildings and saw Salt & Flour a level up, there IS an OZ! A floor above from where we were at.  After being Salt & Flour, we STILL MAY not be able to find it.

So we pulled into I think it was Ramp B. God knows. Had we been able to figure out the streets, Salt & Flour has Valet, we would have paid double. So we walked out of the ramp onto a rainy street, where we saw Darios, E said Darios was great why don’t we cut our losses and eat there! Nope we were ON a QUEST!

So we found a parking garage door with the name Bassett Hound on it. I thought what the hell we went to the door. It was a small bar that I’m sure is packed when the Twins are playing. We told the bartender of our plight and Brandon said it’s a few floors up I’ll take you there. We owe the man a drink he had a full bar he left for us. OK one lady at the bar but still. He was very nice to help us find Salt & Flour.

We got out of the elevator and THERE it was SALT & FLOUR across the rainy, courtyard. We went in and it was your typical sports bar. Is it too late to reconsider Darios? The Maitre De said HI, two? I should have flipped her off if she was the one answering the phone. But that is beneath me, that said I have my nights.

We were promptly seated in the place that was mostly empty. That said the Twins would not have their home opener for about ten days, who goes down there off season. Salt and Flour is across the street from the Twin Stadium.

So we looked over the menu and the wine list. They have Orange Wine on the menu. I will try any wine. Except a couple of White Grapes and any Orange wine. Red wine is made Red by keeping the pressed red grape juice on the grape’s skins for a day or more. Orange wine is White grape juice left for a few days on the White/Green Grape skins. Most of us think it is absolutely terrible. But hey they eat Lutefisk in this state, a fair comparison. We ordered a Barbera for $12 and a Cab for $15, both were non-descript.

We ordered A breadbasket for $10 which was good. Then we had the Lobster Gnocchi $38 which was not bad. We were warned, from people we drink wine with, to avoid certain dishes. Never a good sign.

Matthew our server tried his best even offered us some gelato for our issues we had earlier. But we just wanted to finish and go home.

One thing of note. I have this strange things about bathrooms, I have seen some unique ones in the Twin Cities.  Across the hall from the bathroom is the Hope & Prayer Wall. On it people writes notes with their hopes & prayers. I enjoyed reading a few.  Prayers for injustice, for Palestine and a Mercedes, she sure had needs.

Salt & Flour is just not our kind of place. If you are looking for a sports bar to take the gang before or after a twins game it might be. Just not for a nightly meal. Our bill was $102. Plus, two $20 parking’s, making it about $150. We won’t be back. We’ll go back to Darios.
