Murrays

On the very short list to complete the Twin Cities phrase:
“Congratulations let’s go to (Restaurant) and celebrate”
Murrays is one of a handful of restaurants that could finish that phrase. Murrays is a Minneapolis downtown institution. It’s a place where wedding proposals are made, parents are informed of their grandkids, business deals are struck and a dozen other pinnacles of life.
Murrays is known for their Butter Steak. A steak you can cut with a butter knife. A place that is reminiscent of the history of Minneapolis seen by the many pictures of who has been there at the entrance. One of Murrays catch phrases is “When you serve 10,000 steaks a year, you are doing something right!” Murray’s ownership is in their third generation.
E had been to Murrays a number of times for business, I had never been there. We knew we would go there; we had no event to celebrate there. So, when my one-year anniversary of my heart valve replacement came up, we needed no other reason.
If you ever wonder what great restaurant service of the Thirties, forties, fifties… was, just go to Murrays, it’s still there. You could expect your waiter to check in to see if you needed anything about every five minutes.
The only issue I had on the night was the dress code. This is that place from the movies that provided you with a jacket if you wore none into the place. E & I were both dressed for Murrays. But we were amazed, even though we were at the peak of summer at the end of July, the number of people with cutoff shorts. Nothing wrong with that, but at MURRAYS? But everyone was fine.
The food at Murrays is in a word memorable. We had an outstanding Shrimp cocktail and a dinner salad each.
We went through the menu and had a traditional steak meal with bread and salad and potato and then had to determine WHICH steak. Murrays is known for its butter steak and it just seems wrong for us to do a review of the place and not have the butter steak, so we ordered it.
The Silver Butter Knife Steak for two is a 28 oz Strip sirloin carved tableside for $135. Our waiter brought out a small table then came out a gentleman with the steak and cutting board and cut the steak for E&I in small thin pieces. One thing I found interesting is we each were given a steak, not a butter knife to further cut the steak for eating. It was a good steak. Was it the best steak we ever had? Well, I’ll tell you a Morellis steak cooked on our back deck grill listening to the birds, drinking wine while watching TV outside is difficult to beat. But for a restaurant steak, it was very good. And we were served enough to have some for Saturday breakfast. With the great baked potato, it was the full meal deal.

For a six-star restaurant you can expect to pay a few more shillings than normal. And yes, the bill went over $200 about twice what we normally pay. But Murrays is an event restaurant, and the food and bill should be memorable. I am glad we went, and I could experience the old-world charm Murrays has, Will we return, I’m sure we will but we’ll need to have another event. Keep Murrays in mind for such an event.
