Tonight we are at the New French Restaurant Maison Margaux called the French Restaurant bringing Paris to the North Loop.
This was a place E as been waiting six weeks with reservations to see. It is in the building Ribinick furs were in for 50 years, we were there often. It is amazing what Maison has done with the place.
Maison is about two blocks from the Hewing and from North Loop Wine were we taste wine on most Friday nights.
On their website Maison comments they are offering their staff a living wage, health options and profit sharing. Some of that is archived by adding 5% to every bill. We are fine with 5%, some restaurants are charging 20% about the bill, we find 20% steep.
One thing that E was looking forward to was the sourdough bread made from 130 year old yeast brought over from France, about the age of the Eifle Tower. The bread was good.
Maison is a place you can leave satisfied with a $100 bill as we did. The also have wine for $2500 a bottle. I have bought vehicles for less than that. In a word you can impress anyone you desire. Or eat on as budget.
The place, food and wait staff are right out of Paris, including an occasional French song in the background music.
And if you are not into food, there is an amazing bar in the lower level. And the upper level has a room to be reserved for special event. Everything was spotless.
The attending to patrons is amazing. Within five minutes of sitting down we had five people asking if we wanted: three different types of water, help with the wine list, help with the menu and our waiter also waited to help. We haven't seen this for years.
With exception of a table of "Look At Me" thirty something types, who quieted down after a few people looked at them, the place was quiet and romantic. We had a table 5 feet away and never heard a word… incredible.
The wine list was about ten pages in length with wines starting at about $12 a glass for great pours. E & I both ordered Noirs. E's Noir was from the Russian River separating Napa & Sonoma just north of San Fran. My Pinot was from Argentina. Both were tasty… OK E never shared but she said it was scrumptious.
We had two different types of bread: the sourdough bread and a bread basket we ordered. When in Paris you drink wine & eat bread. We had a special butter and a special liquid cheese topping. It was very good.
A portion of the reason we can go out every Friday is because we watch our food budget while trying the important things the restaurant offers. And more importantly not only our wallet but our waistline Thanks us.
So after the bread and great wine we split a plate of Pistou Jambon Linguini. It was good but not to die for. We were given a generous portion and neither of us left hungry.
When the bill came we were absolutely pleasantly surprised. I looked at the bill and said, how much do you think? E said $180? E said it must be wrong, it was only $91. We rarely ever eat at a restaurant of this quality, had good wine and was full for under $120. But again we always share.
So after touring the rest of the Paris of North Loop, we walked outside to the quiet sidewalk where we met some of our wine tasting friends and gave the Vallet $20 for a $12 parking. There was absolutely nothing but a great restaurant experience.
We'll be back, you should too!
