E and I have been riding bike for about ten years. With E having retina issue and men and women seem to have a speed differential we have chose to ride a tandem bike. We live in a valley. The problem with that is no matter which way we start it’s always a ten-minute ride to get out of the valley. WE believe in exercise like anyone else but that ten minutes of pain can be a non-starter. Fast forward to the introduction of the e-bikes. We tried out a rare tandem e-bike at the Pedego e-bike shop in Stillwater and bought it. It was a bit pricey, let’s just say over twice what a regular ebike costs, but we love it and it’s safer than motorcycle these days with texting and driving.
We regularly go from New Brighton along Old Highway 8 on the trails and sidewalks to the Mill City Farmers Market by the Guthrie and the Stone Arch Bridge by the Mpls river front and the stone arch bridge.
One trail we had known about for years and never been on was the Luce Line Trail starting in North or West Minneapolis in the Theordore Wirth Parkway and going 63 miles to the great city of Cosmos. Named the city with the coolest water tower in the world. We decided on a beautiful Saturday to go out to Luce Line Brewery next to the trail in Plymouth and discover the trail. There is ample parking at the brewery and you can finish your ride with a burger and a brew. The place is also pet & kid friendly.
We found the ride beautiful and interesting. And worried little about our Explorer parked at the brewery on Highway 55 then at Theodore Wirth with limited parking. The only issue we had was the fifty feet between the parking lot and the trail looked like the entrance to Grand Canyon with a deep gorge we almost lost our bike in. It took four people to pull it out.
But once on the trail it was nice. There is a bathroom about every two miles. So as Mom always said: Pee before you go! The trail is about a mile of black top and the rest crushed rock about four feet wide and VERY flat! It was built on the Luce Line railroad spur so thanks to the rail roads.
There are maps about every mile and mile markers every half mile. That is important to e-bike folk because God forbid you need to pedal! The trail goes through a number of tunnels and bridges and across local city streets. It was not very crowded the day we went we probably saw fifty people in two hours. And the houses, lakes, nature and views are great.
Oh if you are into horses next to the bike/walking path is a horse path, we saw no horses that day abut it’s a great path for them too. WE took about two hours and went about ten miles total.
After we ate a burger and had a beer at the Luce Line brewery with abundant space for all! We’ll be back!
