First of all if you want to see a cool website, coming from someone who has been crating websites for almost 30 years Laylinerestaurant.com is a very well created site. They have video flying a drone through their front door with their place full of people, over the bar through the place and over their patio. I have never seen such a well done website. They have hours, location, menus (without prices) drinks ect. I only wish the place was as good as their website.
If you, after a long work week are looking for a quiet private place to conclude your week with interesting food, Layline is NOT the place. It is FAR from quiet. It is about as loud as a sports bar. And as we were concluding our dinner there was a 5some came in at 8 PM that was clearly drinking elsewhere before they came to Layline that increased the volume of the place and the language. IN a word, NOT our thing.
As you can see by going to their website Layline is a nice clean place with a great patio downtown Excelsior. It’s a stones throw from our friends at Excelsior brewing. E heard about it on KMSP 9 TC Live. To get you a general feeling of the size I snapped a picture that says max occupancy of 147 so it is larger than most restaurants.
They had a descent wine list 3 sparklings, 2 orange wines (that’s whites left with skins on, like reds do), six reds with a Cab Sav for from Monterey for $17 and Chianti for $16 for me. Both were good. In addition, for reds they have a rotating house red, a Tempranillo, a Sangiovese and a Noir all between $14-$18. Then for whites they have a rotating house, a Grii, Sav Blanc/Cortese and a Sav Blanc prices $13-$20… for those of you that like GRASSY! They also have a good assortment of bottle options.
There also is a large list of special cocktails if that is your drink of choice, all about $16. Six beers from $6 and other options.
For salads they have four: Caesar, Beet, wedge and Balsamic Greens. We chose the Balsamic Greens salad that was good and we got the last one of the night.
For Appetizers we went with the Calamari which was good but not to die for. We chose that from a list of: Chicken Liver Mousse, Johnnycake, Smoke Salmon, Tuna Crudo, Steamed Mussles and Pok Pok Wings. Quite a selection of Apps for $15 - $22.
For main dishes they had four pastas: Carbonara, Linguine, Pesto & Hong Kong Noodles for about $26. Four sandwiches including: Chicken, burger, Chiporipan and Lobster roll for $18-$39. For Fish & Meats they had a grilled pork chop, cedar plank Salmon, seared Halibut and our choice a strip steak with duck fat fries, which again was good but not to die for, for $36 - $45.
Our bill was $114 plus $11 tax. Which was about average what we spend. Though not to die for and loud I can see us eating there after the Excelsior Art Show we go to every year. One thing not to forget they have a great patio with nice seats by a fire that looks comfy if you are in the area.
