What makes a great restaurant? There are a hundred things in play, anyone of which can knock you of the top ten. La Grolla is without question in our top ten. When restaurants opened up after Covid E asked where I wanted to go? I quickly responded with obviously La Grolla. Though many times packed they have ALWAYS been great to us.
If we are allowed, E ALWAYS make reservations. We don’t wait in lines. When we showed up for our 7:30 Friday night reservation, there was a line. About twenty people between the door and the Maitre D. I entered the zoo after parking in the SAFE, FREE LOT Lagrolla offers their guests. The line spoke volumes, no line at Subway at that time. The Zoo line was very nice. But E my lovely wife was not found in it. She was nicely sitting at the bar ready to order feet away.
If you aren’t willing to take space at the bar on occasion, maybe you should not go out on Friday night. We had sat at the bar before, it was fine. In fact, in the Midwest outside of MSP MOST people eat at the bar. It’s not a big deal. And that allowed someone else to sit earlier.
So, we started looking at the wine list. One of things that makes LaGrolla great is they understand the wine list is simply a portion of the menu. It’s not a place for beverages it’s a place where you find the link between food and wine to make an otherwise good meal, incredible. And La Grolla gets that. The servers KNOW which wines go with which foods to bring out the flavor in each.
For wine we chose J Lohr Seven Oaks Cab Sav for $12, we have been to their winery, also beautiful place with nice people. And then we went with the Italian Rebels with the Brancaia Super Tuscan $15. Bring a second glass please! When, in ROME! Talk about bringing out the flavor.
Followed by Crab Cakes for $18 and their incredible Calamari for $16. Then on a rare occasion E&I did not share an entrée’ and YES, we left food on the table. I had Fettuccine Alfredo for $18 and E had Gnocchi Salentina for $19.
All were incredible to eat and drink. Total bill $124 - $12 local tax, and did we need that second Super Tuscan for $15, back to the $100 we try to make.
