Gorkha Palace
Are you looking for the BEST Indian Food in the Twin Cities? If so don’t ask us. When we grew up in Central WI & Eastern SD if we were asked about Indian food we would talk about Twigs & Nuts. Wait to quote Tom Bernard decades ago from Radio station KQ you know DOT not Feather Indian. We are talking East Indian Food here. Oh and American Indian food, Owamni we rated that as the WORST place to eat in the TC. We like a LOT of types of food, Indian is not one of them.
Every Friday night we drive down 35W. We exit on University and drive to Hennepin. At the corner of University and Hennepin, Kitty corner from Surdyks Liquor Store is Gorkha Palace. About once a month we had talked about going to Gorkha Palace. We argued over if we had been there. Turns out we had not. So, we went there for our Friday Night review.
I have a request. If you are serving burgers, fries, steaks, American food you can have a normal print menu. If you are serving non-traditional food, for instance East Indian could you make ONE picture book for us food idiots to look at. There is a restaurant called On’s Kitchen University and Snelling that did exactly that. NOT that the picture relates the taste but it gives the rest of us an idea.
I have always been able to handle much more spicy food than E. Well except for Tibetan food, you guys are nuts with your spices. So, when E was playing our thirty questions with the waiter, he asked how spicy we wanted it. I told the server my South Dakota bride considered Catchup a spice. He said OK, very mild then.
For wine E ordered a CA Bouchard Estate Cab $12 and I ordered and CA Alias Noir for $8, both were OK.
For an Appetizer we ordered Naan Bread for $3.50 (Traditional leavened, hand tossed bread freshly baked in clay pots).
Second Appetizer we ordered Vegetable Samosa for $5.95 (Crispy triangular pastries stuffed with seasoned potatoes & peas).
For an Entrée we ordered Chicken Tikka (mild) $16.95 (Chunks of chicken breasts marinated in herbs & spices cooked in a clay oven).
The chicken Tikka came out sizzling but was not hot.
It filled us up but was just not our style. It was something different.
As you can see by the packed place prime time on a Friday night, though there was continuous take out, the sit-down crowd was sparce.
Our Total bill $58.05 which was reasonable, for a similar price we’ll go to El Bodegon Argentinian food of Wayzata. Tell us if you know a great Indian food place.
