Watching the July 4th Drone show in Santa Barbara
We like fireworks. But few firework displays can compare to those of the 1990s at the MN State Fairgrounds before OSHA. Back then E&I would lay on the grass and look up at the great fireworks displays and then watch the burning embers get ever so close and occasionally hear the screams “the Blankets on fire!” We’d throw some beer to help. But that was another time with great experiences.
That was not option for Santa Barbara USA 250 experience. We could drive down to the beach and hope to be back to the room two hours later only a mile away. So after talking to a nice lady from the Santa Barbara Chamber of Commerce in the Funk Zone by the beach earlier in the day we chose to go to an area high school for a free drone show. I swear I was told it was from 6PM to 9PM. But as will happen maybe I wasn’t listening.
We arrived at drone show at 8 PM. We don’t do three-hour shows. There were at LEAST a dozen cops at a fortified High School. We felt safe. It was a harvest fair environment. There must have been 50 booths, singing, jugglers, kids everywhere. We just went to the end of the football stadium and laid on the astro-turf for an hour and a half until 9:30 when the drone show started.
There were 200 drones in the show. They came out and went back as a pillar like a military formation. The show was probably fifteen minutes, similar to a fireworks show. They showed a US Flag, the country, several local names and mascots, it was different than fireworks but better than not being at any display.
E’s timing was perfect. She asked to leave before then end of the show. And as we got to the parking lot the show was over. Since I backed in, we were on the road and never stopped for traffic even though there was 10,000 people at the event. Fifteen minutes later we were at the hotel in bed. A well spent Fourth Of July.
