Country Sun Christmas Tree Farm Christmas is a big thing in our household. And a Christmas Tree is the center of that. We have acquired Christmas Trees a number of ways. We have gone to area Cut your own Christmas Tree places. We have found what we like in the lot is not always what works well at home. But if you have kids under 12 the entire event can be priceless. You can save a good amount of money by cut your own and you will not find a fresher tree. 

But as years have gone by and we no longer have a young kid to impress we prefer pre-cut trees. We have bought pre-cut Christmas tree from several sources including Menards and Gertens and others. We have settled on Country Sun Christmas tree farm on Hwy 36 half way to Stillwater. It’s that place on the south side of 36 that has autumn/Halloween events. And had an old, haunted mansion in the yard. 

Why Country Sun? We like a 9-10’ tree, a nice size. A lot of lots have 8’ trees, few have 9’ trees and with an 11’ ceiling in our house an 8’ tree looks strange. Country Sun have trees to 15’. Yes, they are more expensive, but they have the trees we desire. So, measure where you are putting your tree, add a foot (you’ll be cutting the top & bottom) and take the measuring tape with you. This year we have an 8.5’ tree and it looks small. 

Besides having larger trees, Country Sun also hangs their tree by the top. Which means you can walk around and spin the tree in addition to seeing how straight the trunk is. We have cut a foot off trees because the trunk was bent and would not fit in a stand. And you will need nearly a foot clear trunk for the stand. Add to that Country Sun and most good Christmas tree lots will make a fresh cut and cut an inch off the tree you choose. 

There are three areas for trees at Country Sun. There is a larger and corporate tree area on the front east side. Those are for 8’+ trees and cost $120+. On the front west side of Country Sun is Bigger Corporate trees $12’+ and prices in the $200. We found this out a few years ago. We look over 8-10 trees, all great and we are done. 

In the greenhouse portion of Country Sun is a huge area of Christmas trees. The trees are grouped by size. On the back wall is the 7-9’, that is where we used to shop. You can shop choose between 50 trees. This is where most people shop. It helps to bring a few kids to stand by your 5 choices as you narrow your choices. 

After you choose a tree the tree techs will cut a new cut on the trunk, bag it for you then expertly put it on your vehicle, something a lot of tree farms won’t do. If you have ever lost a tree that fell off on the freeway after you tied it down, a few bucks extra are worthwhile. 

Country Sun has more that just trees. They have many things for Christmas: Wreathes and display for your front steps. Look twice at the display pots for your front steps. It’s a perfect place to hide your Amazon deliveries out of sight of porch pirates. 

So, you got your tree home, now what? Joe Soucheray from KSTPs Garage Logic Radio Show tells us it takes seven years to get a Christmas tree right. As someone who was cuddling next to a fire, watching the Hallmark channel on a Saturday night to watch a tree fall on you, best you take his advice. On year seven we got it right. Our stand is 30 lbs and has a big throat. Further I figured out if I slip a 4” piece of PVC on the end of the trunk there is a lot less issue with trying to get pins to hold on trunks. My technique has never failed, use it.
