E & I are CEO Catholics. We learned that at Christmas a number of years ago when Father Bill our priest started his sermon with welcome: parishioners, Guests, friends and the CEO Catholics. E & I looked at each other puzzled as father returned to the mic and said: My the way that would be our parishioners that we see Christmas & Easter Only. E & I turned to each other & laughed; that’s us. Despite sending our son & grandson to Catholic school.

So, when lent comes we TRY to eat like good Catholics. To that end E looks for Fish places during lent. Both of us crave the fish we had in our youth in the hinterlands of WI & SD.  

So, on Friday night as we were going to our wine tasting I asked where we were eating tonight. She said Anchor Fish & Chips in the Nordeast. I was noticeably excited. Great fish during lent! One LESS thing to listen to when I approach the pearly gates.

So, we located Anchor Fish on the corner of 13th Ave NE & 3rd St NE. Other then not hearing Polish Music on an accordion I don’t know how we could have been more in the NordEast. For those that have been in the area it’s two blocks north of the huge Mc Donalds on University & Broadway. A few blocks from the Old Grain Belt Brewery on Broadway & the River.
To say they would have changed the place little by putting a: Legion, Eagles or VFW sign on the front would not be an understatement, but places like this take E & I back to our youth. It’s the type of place when newbies walk in, everyone turns to look and a table in the middle of the bar is cleared JUST FOR YOU. Gotta keep an eye on you. This is Americana at it’s finest, some of the greatest people on the earth. One could expect great food and a great time at a place like this. Hell, you might come home with a meal of meat besides.
I forgot if we had reservations but on a Friday night at 7 PM they had a place for us. We looked at the menus and it turns out they don’t have a wine list. It’s on the menu below the beer. And if you order wine in a place like this, you get what you deserve. Anchor Fish & Chips is a Beer place. E & I both had the Cab; we passed on the Rose’ & Prosecco Mimosa. Drinking mid to lower shelf wine makes one appreciate the great wine we had earlier in the hour.
On to the menu. We were there for Fish & Chips and that is what was on the menu in addition to Shepherds Pie and Meat Pastie. I was taken back over the pond the more I read. They even have Poutine! But Fish & Chips it was for us. Only $16.50 and that was Wild Alaskan Cod with Chips & Cole Slaw. E thought it was very good Cole Slaw like her mom made. I was introduced to Cole Slaw on my twelve-hour trip to Minot AFB when I was hungry and there was something left in the KFC bag. Anchor F&C Cole slaw did not meet my undiscerning palate, but what do I know about Cole slaw.
The fish was good but NOT to die for. The service was good, and all the people were nice. We continue to look for a great Fish & Chips place. Sadly, it may be Culvers might fit my bill. Our bill was $64 which is low to average these days. If you want to take a trip to where half of America goes out to eat on an average Friday night, give Anchor Fish & Chips in the Nordeast a try, we thought it was good.
