6 Oz Pour
The Way

History has always fascinated me. Partially because the definition is all encompassing. It’s anything related to the past: Food, Engineering, fashion, leaders, borders it’s endless. After reading and listening to endless books and podcasts I thought I was pretty good.

That was until this past weekend. When E and I searched for a movie to watch. Since there was crap new on Prime and Hulu and Netflix, we have resorted to finding a great actor and scanning for their older movies we have missed. The JFK Jr movie came up and next to it was a movie of JFK we had seen. But Martin Sheens face came up. We like him as an actor so I searched his other movies online. He has an interesting movie from 2010 directed by his son, Emilio.

The movie was about a walking pilgrimage across the Rioja wine region and Basque region of Northern Spain ending at the North West corner of Spain by the Atlantic Ocean at the Church to St James. It is a walking pilgrimage that Martin Sheens movie son died on, so Martin Sheen did the pilgrimage for this son. As hundreds of thousands of people all around the world do every year. We knew young people went to Europe but did not know how many went on this holy pilgrimage of The WAY! As the 2010 movie is named.

So, Thursday comes it is 6 oz wine class night. The theme is the religious pilgrimages across Northern Spain wine country to St James. Exactly what the movie was about. Serendipity, I think SO! Doug class was on religion and wine and the pilgrimages over the century. There was so much history I still need to discover.

If you are unfamiliar with Doug’s 6 oz Pours wine classes, they are run in the basement of North Loop Wine & Spirits on Washington downtown. This night there was about 50 people sampling seven wines for about $70 each. The wines are shown in the pictures below. Doug offers a wine perspective of life and history. This month it was on the pilgrimages to religious sites. Most of his time was spent in Norther Spain in the Rioja/Basque region on the path to St James.

He talked about the region and the wines in addition to the politics of the area. That included when Franco was in charge of Spain, and he had Hitler and Mussolini bomb the Norther Spain Basque region during their regional celebration.

Doug talked about the 30-day trek through the region and some of the wines and the terrain and farming methods of the area. And gave us all a whole different feeling about Spain it’s wines and how it fits into the world.

The class was fun and worthwhile. I expect Doug to teach it again next year.
