Doug teaches 6 oz pour classes in the basement of North Loop Wine & Spirits.
Doug was once the wine buyer for North Loop and has been in the industry for over 20 years. Doug has the ability to link wine and most of our society: history, Art, architecture, religion, food … and the link continues. Think you know history if you don’t know the History of wine from Doug’s perspective you have only started.

E & I are good friends with Doug, and we are regulars at his classes. This class was an overview of California wines in about an hour. As much as he taught us, he only touched the surface. BTW 6 Oz is the average wine pour at a restaurant.

In the class we taste seven wines with cheese & special bread.

Doug took us through the geological construct of California. It’s hills and valleys, the wind and rain and how it affects California grapes, and the wine produced from them.
He talked about the different California wine regions not just Napa & Sonoma but also Paso and Santa Barbara, Medicino County.

He spoke of the movie Sideways and the great tasting in France that put California Wine on the map and how it affected the wine industry. He spoke of the different qualities of wines and the pick decisions the wine maker must make and what we should look for.

He spoke of the American Wine bug Phylloxera and how it almost destroyed the European wine industry and the solution.

And then Doug taught us what to look for in the taste of a wine and answered 20+ questions by the crowd. Doug’s tastings are not cheap at $70 each, limit 50 people but if you want to learn about wine, it is one of the best values around. We are going to a class again later this month.
